January 10, 2002 - President George W. Bush proudly signs into law, a defense appropriations bill giving the Pentagon $317.2 billion dollars and sets aside an additional $20 billion for the military campaign in Afghanistan.  © Mike Lynaugh September 11, 2003 - Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers (in uniform) and Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld (right), console family members of those lost two years ago today during the terrorist attack on the Pentagon.  The Secretary and General attended a memorial service at Arlington National Cemetery for the family members of those lost at the Pentagon. December 11, 2001 - Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld stands and addresses the audience during the 3-month anniversary services to honor those lost on the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.  The damaged section of the Pentagon has already been removed and you can see that reconstruction has already begun.  The Pentagon plans to move employees back into the outer ring that was damaged during the attacks by the one-year anniversary of the attacks.  © Mike Lynaugh March 21, 2003 - Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers, pauses before replying to a question posed to him about the difficulties that Turkey has posed by delaying overflights of coalition aircraft over their country.  The General replied, ''Well, we've said a couple of times from up here that the -- that we have forces in the north now. General Franks intends to put more forces into the north. It would be helpful if Turkey would go along and make the arrangements that the parliament approved, and that is for overflights. Anne Skelly.  Katie informed the Secretary she wanted to be a reporter and he asked if she had any questions she would like to ask him.  She replied, "Can you please describe the most unreported eventful progress in Iraq?"  Laughing, General Abizaid (not shown) said, "That's the hardest question you've gotten all day, Mr. Secretary." January 28, 2003 - Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, is greeted by members of Congress at the conclusion of President George W. Bush's second "State of the Union" address. June 4, 2002 - Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld discusses the goals of his upcoming trip to India and Pakistan.  Secretary Rumsfeld is being sent to speak to the leaders of the two countries to try to calm both sides down and try to put an end to the recent fighting on the border of Kashmir. April 7, 2003 - Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld  answers a reporter's question about the fate of Iraqi General Ali Hassan al-Majid, the architect of the 1988 genocide of Iraqi Kurds, who has come to be known as "Chemical Ali".  The Secretary replied, "We believe that the reign of terror of 'Chemical Ali' has come to an end. As of 1:00pm the next phase of the liberation of Iraq began. The General replied, "Air strikes continue. In the last 24 hours coalition air forces have flown more than 1,000 sorties over Iraq. Since the war began we have fired over 725 Tomahawks and dropped over 12,000 precision-guided munitions. The Secretary stated today, in response to the apparent liberation of Baghdad this morning, "This is a good day for the Iraqi people. There is no question but that there are difficult and very dangerous days ahead and that the fighting will continue for some period. But certainly anyone seeing the faces of the liberated Iraqis -- the free Iraqis -- has to say that this is a very good day."  © Mike Lynaugh April 9, 2003 - Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld shows a rare smile since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 24, 2003.  During his opening remarks during today's daily Pentagon press briefing he stated, "Saddam Hussein is now taking his rightful place alongside Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Ceausescu in the pantheon of failed, brutal dictators, and the Iraqi people are well on their way to freedom."  © Mike Lynaugh January 10, 2002 - President George W.
