Major General Benjamin Lincoln, General Washington's second in-command.  On May 12, 1780, General Lincoln surrendered the city of Charleston, South Carolina and his army of 5000 men to the British.  He was captured in the surrender and released that fall in an exchange of a German general that had been captured at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777.
