Grave of Jennie Wade, Evergreen Cemetery. Ms. Wade was the only civilian killed during the Battle of Gettysburg. She was killed while baking bread for the troops fighting near her home when a single bullet went through the wall in her home, through the door to her kitchen, striking her in the spine and killing her instantly. Her grave is one of only two graves in the United States where the American Flag flies 24 hours a day over a female's grave. The other one is Betsy Ross. |
