Civil War reenactor Bethany Lacy explains the process of firing a cannon during an artillery demonstration at Manassas National Battlefield Park during the 143rd anniversary of the Battle of First Manassas, the first major battle of the Civil War. Bethany Lacy is one of only a handful of female artillery living historians. Although there were approximately 600 documented cases in which women fought in combat roles during battles during the Civil War, the "vivandières", there is still a prejudice among some today that it is not appropriate for a female to portray Civil War combatants. |
