Just so you know....it took me all day to find this grave. This is the grave of the children of General James Longstreet. For some reason it is not listed on the official maps given out by Hollywood Cemetery, it's not on their website, and I couldn't find it anywhere. I actually drove around for an extra hour looking at every grave I went by to try to find this one. I do not want you to have to go through what I did to try to find it. It is located right by the entrance to the cemetery. If you look at the official map for the cemetery, it is located right next to General John Imboden (#19). I do hope you visit this grave during your next visit to Hollywood Cemetery. I know how the South still feels about General Longstreet, but in my opinion, to not give him a memorial in Richmond is one thing, but to not even list his children on any Hollywood Cemetery literature that is given out is very distasteful. When General Longstreet lost his 3 children during the early months of 1862 he was a hero of the Confederacy, and no matter what public opinion might say about him at Gettysburg, or after the war, the sad truth is that he fought faithfully and with his heart until standing with General Lee at Appomattox. He even tried to convince General Lee to not give up yet. He is a true hero, and his children deserve the respect that is long overdue to their family name. © Mike Lynaugh |
