May 18, 2002 - An F/A-18 Hornet approaches breaking the sound barrier during the cold, rainy morning at this year's "Joint Services Open House" airshow at Andrews Air Force Base.  The vapor you see is moisture being ripped from the air and riding on the shock wave produced by the aircraft by the aircraft approaching the speed of sound.  This shock wave is only visible for a fraction of a second when the aircraft approaches the proper speed.  This pilot however, reduced his speed in time and did not break the sound barrier.
